This wave has captivated the imagination of the surfing community in Ireland for years. Aill na Searrach or “Aileens” was first spotted by photographer Mickey Smith, just off the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland. At first it was thought the wave might be impossible to ride, but in 2005 , local Irish surfer John Mc Carthy became the first to do so, and stake his claim in Irish surfing history.

It was Mc Carthy who affectionately named the wave “Aileens” , as a reference to the local legend of “Aill na Searrach”  ( leap of the foals ) which takes place at the Cliffs of Moher.

Since 2005, the wave has become world renowned, and regularly attracts some of the biggest names in surfing, to the rugged Irish cliffs.
