What is the History of Father’s Day?
Father’s Day, as we know it, has a rich and somewhat surprising history. The idea of dedicating a day to fathers started gaining traction in the early 20th century. The first known celebration of Father’s Day was on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was held in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, but it didn’t gain much national attention.
The movement gained momentum thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, which had become official in 1914, Dodd wanted a similar day to honour fathers. Her own father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children, was her inspiration. She lobbied local churches, government officials, and organizations to support her cause. The first state-wide Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Washington State.
It wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became a permanent national holiday in the United States, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law. Since then, it has been celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year.
Why is it a Different Date Every Year?
The date of Father’s Day varies each year because it is tied to the third Sunday of June. This ensures that it always falls on a Sunday, providing families the perfect opportunity to celebrate without the constraints of a typical workday. While the exact date changes, the sentiment remains constant—a day dedicated to appreciating the fathers and father figures in our lives.
Famous Irish Dads Through History
Ireland, with our rich cultural heritage, has seen many famous fathers throughout history. One notable example is Daniel O'Connell, often referred to as “The Liberator.” O'Connell was a key figure in the movement for Catholic emancipation and his dedication to his cause set a powerful example for his children and generations to come. You’ll find his statue standing watch over O’Connell Street as the city vibrates below.
Another remarkable father-son duo in Irish history is Éamon de Valera and his son, Vivion de Valera. Éamon, a dominant political figure in Ireland, served as the President and Taoiseach. His son Vivion followed in his footsteps, becoming a notable lawyer, major in the military and a serving member of the Dail.
Celtic Fathers and Traditions
Celtic traditions have always placed a strong emphasis on family and paternal roles. In ancient Celtic society, fathers were seen as the protectors and providers. They were also the keepers of wisdom and tradition, passing down stories and skills from one generation to the next. This deep respect for the paternal role is still evident in many Irish families today.
One such tradition is the storytelling session, where fathers would gather their families and share tales of heroism, folklore, and family history. These sessions were more than just entertainment; they were a means of instilling values and preserving cultural heritage.
