The Most Popular Attraction in Ireland - The Cliffs of Moher
Have you ever wondered what the most popular attraction in Ireland is? With a staggering 1.5 million people visiting each year, the Cliffs of Moher hold this prestigious title.
But why are the Cliffs of Moher so famous? Let’s dive into the allure of this natural wonder and uncover what makes it such a magnet for tourists and locals alike.
Where does the name Cliffs of Moher come from?
The Cliffs take their name from a ruined promontory fort 'Mothar' – which was demolished during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, to make room for a signal tower at Hag's Head. The word 'Mothar 'in old Gaelic means 'the ruin of a fort.
Why Are the Cliffs of Moher So Famous?
Partially, it’s the views. Imagine standing at the edge of a cliff, staring off 700 feet into the distance where the land meets the sea in a dramatic, awe-inspiring manner. The sheer strength and power of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the cliffs is a humbling experience. The Cliffs of Moher stretch for about 14 km along the western coast of Ireland, offering panoramic vistas that are second to none. It’s a place where nature’s raw beauty is on full display, and it’s easy to see why so many people are drawn to it.
And have you heard of Aill Na Searrach or The Leap of the Foals?
According to this tale, the ancient deities known as the Tuatha Dé Danann, transformed themselves into horses to escape the spread of Christianity and then hid in the caves near Kilcornan for hundreds of years. Eventually, seven foals emerged, only to be blinded by the sunlight and galloped over the edge of the cliffs and fell into the sea below. This legend gave name to the infamous Aileen's Wave, a massive surf wave that can reach heights of up to 35 feet, the height of a three-story building. Surfers from around the world come to ride this wave at The Cliffs of Moher which is said to reflect the spirits of the galloping foals within its powerful swell. And it was this very spot that inspired our Swell Season Tee.
The cliffs have also been a source of inspiration for countless artists, writers, and filmmakers. From the legendary O’Brien’s Tower to the vibrant birdlife that calls the cliffs home, there is something here for everyone. And for us at Due South, the Cliffs of Moher were so inspiring that we created The Cliffs of Moher Tee, a piece that captures the essence of this iconic landmark.
How Were the Cliffs of Moher Formed?
Naturally, your next question might be, “How were the Cliffs of Moher formed?” These majestic cliffs were formed over 320 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. The Cliffs of Moher, primarily composed of Namurian shale and sandstone laid down during the Upper Carboniferous period, were formed from sedimentary rocks deposited in a shallow marine environment where rivers and streams carried vast amounts of mud and sand into the sea. The alternating layers of shale and sandstone visible today were created from cyclic sediment deposition, resulting in distinct stratification often containing fossils of marine life from the Carboniferous seas, such as crinoids, brachiopods, and ammonites. Over millions of years, the rocks have been subjected to erosion and weathering, with the Atlantic Ocean's powerful waves and the region's climatic conditions carving out the dramatic cliffs that now rise up to 214 meters (702 feet) above sea level.
