Hook Head Lighthouse - The Oldest Intact Operational Lighthouse in the World

Hook Head Lighthouse - The Oldest Intact Operational Lighthouse in the World

As we celebrate the much-anticipated return of our Hook Head Tee, we wanted to dive into why over 200,000 visitors a year are captivated by this historic Irish gem.

Because Hook Head Lighthouse is, in its own words, “the oldest intact operational lighthouse in the world”.

How Old is Hook Head?

Did you know that Hook Head, flaunting one of the world's oldest lighthouses, is steeped in over 800 years of history? That's right! This remarkable headland has been standing as a guardian over the Celtic Sea since medieval times, witnessing the ebb and flow of centuries.

When was Hook Head Lighthouse Built?

This beacon of light has been guiding sailors through treacherous waters since 1210. It's a marvel of medieval engineering, and its longevity is a tribute to the craftsmanship of yesteryears.

Where is Hook Head?

Nestled at the tip of the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, Hook Head is a gem on the southeast coast of Ireland. It's where the rugged landscapes meets the vast expanse of the sea, creating a vista that's both breath-taking and serene. The lighthouse, standing tall against this dramatic backdrop, adds an aura of timelessness to this incredible landscape. You can tour the lighthouse, climb the 115 well-worn steps to the 360-degree view stretching across the Celtic Sea.

Who Built Hook Head?

The story of who built Hook Head Lighthouse is as fascinating as the structure itself. It was built by Strongbow’s son-in-law, William Marshal, a member of the Knights Templar, who were renowned for their military might and part in the Crusade. They envisioned a guiding light for mariners, and what they created has withstood the ravages of time, becoming a symbol of resilience and hope.

And what’s even more remarkable is the lighthouse is still operational today.

As we get ready to relaunch our Hook Head Stargazer Tee, we're not just bringing back a piece of clothing. We're reviving a connection to a place that symbolizes endurance, history, and the power of nature. Our Tee, inspired by Hook Head's indomitable spirit, is a testament to our commitment to sustainable fashion and honouring our rich Irish heritage.
